Hoodia Side Effects: Knowing Is Good

The herb hoodia gordonii is a very popular ingredient in diet pills used for weight loss. It is being extensively marketed today. It is often hyped as being a product that doesn't have any side effects. But is this really true? Are there any hoodia side effects?
The hoodia side effects that have been suffered by people in the United States have often not been seen by people in the African desert who have been taking hoodia for many years. One explanation for this may be because they have a natural diet and aren't exposed to the chemicals and medications we are here.
Liver damage has been listed as one of the possible hoodia side effects. It is believed that this damage is caused by other things that have been taken at the same time. This would mean that hoodia shouldn't be taken with other prescription medicines. These side effects were not noticed in African tribes that use hoodia since they would not be taking other prescription drugs that are available here.
Hoodia should be taken with care by diabetics. It is believed that hoodia causes the brain to believe that the blood sugar level in the diabetic is acceptable. If the blood sugar drops to a level that is too low while the diabetic is on hoodia, there could be complications.
Some of the other hoodia side effects include a suppression of both the appetite and thirst. These could be dangerous as it may be possible to become extremely dehydrated while taking hoodia since the person taking it would not get thirsty and may forget to drink fluids.
Another problem with hoodia is that there are many counterfeit products being sold. Some products may be contaminated and it really is very difficult to know if the product you are buying really contains pure hoodia. So in some cases you really don't know what you are ingesting.
There is a proposal to include a warning label on hoodia gordonii diet pills. The proponents of this warning want it to say that pregnant women or those who are nursing should not take hoodia. The warning will also say that those who have eating disorders or are underweight should not use it. And they want to warn of possible allergic reactions to hoodia as well. The best advice is to talk with your physician before taking hoodia or any other weight loss supplement.
Hoodia gordonii is a popular diet product being advertised as an herb that has no side effects. But are there any hoodia side effects? Although it has used for years by African Bushmen it is new to our culture and our bodies. They don't use prescription drugs like we do so taking hoodia diet pills may cause harmful drug interactions. It can possibly cause liver damage and shouldn't be used by diabetics. There are many counterfeit versions of the product making it hard to know if you are getting a safe product. When starting a weight loss program you will be better off consulting your doctor.
